Day 4 Readings

The readings today were particularly useful not because I didn’t already know the fair use policies but because the readings actually gave helpful letters and responses to deal with fair use issues. I like many teachers I know from time to time come across copies in the copy room we like and snag to use. What these readings did for me was give me a chance to reflect on the validity or usage of these papers.

I also liked the format these readings were put together. They are user friendly and student/user friendly. I can see me spending time with my students this school year going a little more in depth in terms of copyright and fair use.

I agree, with the sharing mentality of teachers, it is so easy to duplicate others' works. Although we've probably all seen these fair use rules before, the details sometimes get lost in our memory. Posting these guidelines by the copy machine might be a good way to remember more often.

Hi Kathy,

Yes, I agree it's tempting to want a copy of the latest activity guides or curriculum supplements. Colleagues and free copies are a hard combo. to resist. A visual reminder, as Patti suggested, is a great way to mitigate this habit.

The timing of these readings was perfect for me. As I have been preparing for my new school year, I have been thinking about preparing my students for all of the technology integrated projects and the issue of copyright. I'm thinking of posting a "kid-friendly" poster that gives them a "quick guide" reminder that they can refer to when using music clips, video clips, photos, etc.

I have a question for all of you: If you were an administrator and wanted to share an article from a magazine or newspaper with your staff, are you allowed to scan it in and share it through e-mail?
